Puerto Viejo de Talamanca has a great West Indian vibe and a wave widely known as Costa Rica's best, it's easy to see why everyone from Surfers to Rasta's and people of all ages visit this piece of paradise.
Located just a short drive from the border of Panama Puerto Viejo isn't the easiest place to get to but once you're there there is an abundance of activities to partake in.
Hiking, surfing, kayaking and snorkeling are fun daytime activities of the area, then after sunset the restaurants and nightlife will thrill you all night long.
So if you're ready for Reggae tunes and a laid back atmosphere make your way down Costa Rica's Atlantic Coast to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. You won't be disappointed.
Fun Facts: Puerto Viejo's Salsa Brava BReak is known as the best wave in Costa Rica. This wave is not for beginners! There is a shallow reef that can cause some serious pain. This wave doesn't discriminate, it offers both left and right breaks.
Getting there: From San Jose take Hwy (32) East to Limon then (365) South, continue down the coast then follow the signs that will have you turn Left to Puerto Viejo. Distance: 210km, Time: 4.5 Hours
From Liberia head South on Hwy (1) then (23) towards Puntarenas. Shortly after hop on the San Jose-Orotina Highway (27) to San Jose then (365) South, continue down the coast then follow the signs that will have you turn Left to Puerto Viejo. Distance: 420km, Time: 8.5 Hours
